Cindy Sheehan is considered a hero to many people in the peace movement. She has publicly been an activist and spoken out against war since her son, Casey Sheehan, was killed in the ongoing "war on terror" in 2004. Attention was brought to her soon after Casey's death when she attempted to address George W. Bush in person at his Texas ranch. That is when "Camp Casey" was formed and many across the world came to join her. Since then she has continued her peace activism in many ways. In this photo she is being given an award : Special Activist Award for Outstanding Service - Gold Star Mother for Peace, by the group Veterans For Peace. She was awarded this during her cross country bike tour in 2014 called Tour de Peace, where she rode her bike from Casey's grave in California to Washington, D.C. to bring attention to ending war, among other issues. She also hosts her own internet program called Cindy Sheehan's Soapbox where she "speaks truth to power" and interviews many other heroic people also doing their part to create peace in the world such as: Howard Zinn, Dr. Michio Kaku, Gore Vidal and Yoko Ono to name a few. The letters behind her spell out the slogan : "War is not healthy for children and other living things", which is coined by anothermotherforpeace.org who recognized her in 2004 at Camp Casey. Cindy Sheehan can be controversial to many people who are unwilling to question authority, but her passion to end war will always be heroic to so many more. ( reference photo credit: Jon Gold)
