Katalin Egely Wins a Sing for Hope Award at the 20th MY HERO Film Festival

The super catchy and compelling music video ‘When it Comes From the Earth’ directed by Katalin Egely from Hungary has won a Sing for Hope Award at the 20th MY HERO Film Festival.

The Sing for Hope Music Video Award, sponsored by Sing for Hope Board member Eva Haller and co-sponsored by Guitars in The Classroom, celebrates music videos that harness the power of the arts to create a better world.

The video depicts a little girl, a cumbia and a sustainable, healthy world. (Cumbia refers to a number of musical rhythms and folk dance traditions of Latin America).

How long have you been making videos?

I graduated eleven years ago. Since then I've made several music videos

What are some of your other works? Are you the vocalist?

Besides music videos, I've worked on documentary movies (animated sequences)

How did the idea for the song/video arise?

The idea came from the lyrics, from the music, and from the direction where we (the musicians and I) think people should go.

Who else worked on the project?

The visual part I make myself. In this case, I discussed the idea with Ruth Hillar's, the singer-composer musician of the Argentinian band called Canticuénticos*; she always has good ideas that give me lots of freedom. I like to talk with her about my ideas, especially when I feel insecure about how to continue with the story.

Who are the musicians?

I can only say that I recommend their music very much. It's not easy to find music for families and children at the level of their quality.

What were some of the challenges, successes, and high points?

The challenges are similar with each project, there are technical and emotional challenges too. For me, the biggest success is always when I hear from someone that they or their children liked my work or when these kinds of animations go to some educational programs. Of course, I am happy when I win something but when someone texts me from the other side of the Earth saying that her kid is watching in loop my films, that makes my heart warmer.

Do you have a personal hero?

All the women working and keeping families together. I think they are heroes.

How does it feel to win an award at the MY HERO Film Festival?

It feels good obviously. I was a bit surprised to hear about the prize because this isn't my newest animation, but positive feedback is always helpful to keep going...

Canticuénticos is a children's music group from the city of Santa Fe in Argentina. Its origins date back to meetings between Ruth Hillar and Daniela Ranallo in a composition workshop given by the Rosario musician Jorge Fandermole in the city of Santa Fe. 1
