The Standard Bearer (Floris Soop 1604 - 1657)
by Rembrandt van Rijn
Painting
Almost certainly a hero of 17th century Amsterdam, Floris Soop was an ensign in one of the city's civic guard companies, as evidenced by the plume in the hat, the flag and the tooled leather sword belt. Soop was a wealthy bachelor whose estate included 140 paintings, including this portrait, one in which Rembrandt shows immense skill in conveying character in Soop's facial features as well as the intricacies of the subject's uniform and standard.
