Herman Doomer
by Rembrandt van Rijn
Painting
Herman Doomer was a master artisan in Amsterdam who made fine cabinets and chests from ebony. Though this portrait was a commissioned piece, it's not hard to imagine that Rembrandt held the man in high esteem, as it is lovingly rendered with the most painstaking of detail. "Especially remarkable in this work are the textures suggested in the head and linen collar." - Metropolitan Museum of Art
