Photography and Film
Julia Margaret Cameron was a British photographer. She became well-known for her portraits of celebrities of the time, notably, British poet Lord Alfred Tennyson. She also created a series of photographs depicting mythological characters like King Arthur and Sappho. Having taken up the camera after being given one for her 48th birthday, Cameron became determined to use it to capture the beauty all around her. She once wrote, "I longed to arrest all the beauty that came before me and at length the longing has been satisfied."
Her work remains a powerful influence on modern photography, particularly her close-cropped portraits and use of darkness to dramatize her subjects. Her enthusiasm to create meaningful art despite her late start and lack of formal training fueled her heroic accomplishments.
