Boy with a Sword
by Edouard Manet (French, 1832 - 1883)
Painting
The boy in the painting was Manet's stepson, Leon Koella-Leenhoff. By dressing the boy in 17th century clothing and adding a period sword, Manet again honors his heroes, the great Spanish artists he admired. Particularly important to Manet was Diego Velasquez, one of the most important painters of the Spanish Golden Age. This piece, along with Young Lady in 1866, were donated to The Metropolitan Museum of art in 1889, the first Manet paintings to become part of a museum collection.
