Vines and Olive Trees, Tarragona
by Joan Miro (Spanish, 1893–1983)
Painting
Painted in 1919, Vines and Olive Trees, Tarragona shows how cubism and his hero, Paul Cezanne influenced Miro's work. Not long after this painting was completed, Miro would move from his native Spain to France where he would be associated with French Surrealism and its practitioners, including fellow countryman Salvador Dali. It seems that inclusion in any group was something Miro detested and he would work hard to create his own artistic language, one that's become clearly identifiable in later works by its childlike compositions populated by a playful variety of symbols and lines.
