Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali was born as Cassius Marcellus Clay on January 17 1942. Through his long and illustrious carear as a man who would become the greatest, also as a person who was dedicated to his goals and beliefs.


Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Ali was raised in a middle class neighbourhood. Early on in his professional career Ali attracted media attention by boasting about his abilities. He immediately captured public and professional interest with his strength of character and wit. He would spout off catchy phrases to sports journalists and powerful contenders.


After being inspired by Malcom X,Ali decided about this time to join the Nation of Islam. Cassius Marcellus Clay was now given the name Muhammad Ali by Eligiah Muhammad. In 1967 he was stripped of his title and boxing license by the World Boxing Association and charged for violating a Selective Service Act by the goverment. Ali commented in Sports Illustrated about what was happening. "I'm giving my title, my wealth maybe my future. Many great men have been tested for there religious belifs. If I pass this test, I'll come out stronger than ever." Ali was sentenced to five years in prison and released on appeal. Ali's conviction was overturned three years later.


Muhammad Ali has earned a reputation as a man dedicated to his goals and belifs, including three World Heavyweight Championships. Ali was married four times and is the father to nine children. Ali lives with his fourth wife, Yolanda, in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Later on in his life Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. "I've got Parkinson's Syndrome. I'm in no pain. If I was in perfect health-if I had won my last two fights - if I had no problems, people would be afraid of me. Now they feel sorry for me. They thought I was Superman. Now they can say 'He's human, like us he has problems."
