My local hero is Glenn Miller because he was an awesome musician. He accomplished a lot in his lifetime and much of it had to do with music. Note the type of music he made. It had an alternative sound. There always has to be some kind of spin-off to every kind of music, no one likes all the same things, especially music. I respect him for that.

Glenn Miller went for his dreams and didn't just sit around and wait for something to happen. He got his first mandolin from his father, but soon after, traded it off for an old horn in Missouri. He joined his school band at age 14 and traveled and made arrangements for other bands. He did anything he could do to get his foot in the door of the music industry. Plus, he made a difference in his music and played a different sound when only jazz was out. He composed options to jazz. He didn't stop just because some people thought he was different or "not right." He didn't care what they thought.

Glenn Miller grew up in Clarinda, Iowa, with his mom, Mattie, father, Elmer, and his brother and sister, Herb and Irene. His name was Alton Glen Miller, but then he changed it to Glenn Miller for musical purposes.

Glenn Miller is inspiring to me because of the way he went about things. He always put his foot down, but then again he was flexible. He knew what he wanted and he went after it, and that takes motivation. He didn't take everything on as an obligation, and he loved what he did. He was proud of his work. He did it and he did it right. He had no questions about what he did, he just did it regardless of anyone's thoughts or opinions. After all, they weren't him. His music was original.
