I chose to paint Kiran Bedi for this art piece because she has shown
me and many young girls that it is possible to break even the
strongest barriers if we have courage, determination and discipline.
Bedi proved that women are equally capable of leadership by becoming
the first woman to join the Indian Police Service. Through her career,
Bedi showcased her resilience by taking on challenging roles,
including serving as Inspector General of Prisons in Tihar Jail. Here,
she introduced programs regarding education, vocational training and
meditation, many of which transformed the lives of inmates. Her
efforts transformed Tihar Jail, paving her path to be the first Indian
and first woman to be appointed head of the United Nations Police and
Police Advisor in the United Nations Department of Peace Operations.
By remaining set in her principles, Bedi was able to overcome
criticism and obstacles, never allowing societal expectations to limit
her dreams. Her leadership and commitment to justice has inspired
countless girls including myself to believe in their own ability to
push back on societal limitations and create meaningful change.
