Nikola Tesla, a Passionate and Kind Genius

by Daniel Bertino from San Diego, California in United States

The spread of civilization may be likened to a fire; first, a feeble spark, next a flickering flame, then a mighty blaze, ever increasing in speed and power

The future we live in now was in the hands of my hero, Nikola Tesla, a Serbian-American inventor who has influenced the world through his great passions. He was able to control and manipulate the electricity we take for granted now. He did his work for the benefit of people around the world and make their lives easier, rather than to achieve fame and wealth. Tesla was a kind and passionate man who spent most of his time in the New York City laboratory. He would work on electrical planning that is still used in our world today. Tesla shaped our future and was ahead of his time. During his life, he met Thomas Edison, a great electrical planner like him. Edison is famous for  creating the first light bulb in history (1870s). However, there are many stories that say Edison may have stolen ideas from Tesla, for they may have been rivals in the past. Tesla’s great passion ultimately led him to invent multiple gadgets powered by electricity, such as induction motors that uses alternating currents, electrical transmissions and wireless communication that benefit our life today.

Nikola Tesla tried to benefit the simplicity of people’s lives through his inventions. Without passion, none of this would have been possible. Therefore, kindness and devotion are essential for shaping a hero. Nikola Tesla once acknowledged that it was his strong passion for science that led him to be an influential hero and a man that shaped our world to what it is today. Tesla had many amazing ideas that he made a reality. He created things that sometimes his colleagues copied but, instead of being rude about it, he pushed that mindset away and focused on helping people and the world around him: “I don't care that they stole my idea... I care that they don't have any of their own”(Tesla). This quote demonstrates Tesla’s personality: his devotion to science, that can change our way to live making it better, went behind the cruelty of others. In fact, not everyone can accept the concept of people stealing their own influential ideas making them grasp power. Tesla, instead, did; his love for progress was more important than success and money. For that reason, Tesla is a kind person to humanity. The process of inventing and pulling out an extraordinary idea is difficult and can make people go insane.“I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success . . . Such emotions make a man forget food, sleep, friends, love, everything"(Tesla). Nikola Tesla realized that, through all of his work, he was forgetting the most important things about living a healthy life. He was never married, had little sleep and thought too deeply about the future of the electrical era. Nikola Tesla was not a secluded person. He lived a life full of people , but he also didn’t have a life of a normal person. He was becoming insane only thinking of his inventions and not about himself. It is true that his creations have shaped the world today; however, by doing so, he had to take greater risks, financially, and with his experiments: some failed attempts caused fires in his laboratory. Nevertheless, Tesla kept doing what he believed in, to enhance and move science forward.

Tesla had an advanced mind, not just because he was highly intelligent: creativity sparked in front of his eyes and followed him through his life. At a young age, Tesla dreamed of light passing as if it was in slow motion. He was inspired and kept pursuing his excitement about electricity until his death. Since then, the modern era kept growing and improving through his thoughts and plans. Many people would describe a hero as inspirational. All of this creativity came from one mind followed by a strong passion that guides people in inventing something useful. “Invention is the most important product of man's creative brain. The ultimate purpose is the complete mastery of mind over the material world, the harnessing of human nature to human needs"(Tesla). This quote briefly explains how passion is developed through creativity that always questions human beings and, consequently, leads to inventing something for their necessities. It’s important to acknowledge that passion makes people have a more creative mind that benefits individuals and inspire others. Nikola Tesla was deeply fascinated in alternating currents. He developed a strong imagination during his early ages and excelled in mathematics and science. “So astounding are the facts in this connection, that it would seem as though the Creator, himself had electrically designed this planet...”(Tesla). This simple quote demonstrates the fact that Tesla was interested in learning and believed that his passion for electricity is how the world will move into a new era. He enjoyed inventing new things by understanding how the world works.

Tesla is an influential and inspiring man; even though he had to deal with many problems in his electrical company, he clearly changed this world by creating a much simpler era through his passions and inventions. He was acknowledged as a generous and kind man because he shared his ideas and experiments with other great inventors who took credit for his work. I chose Nikola Tesla, a genius mind, as my hero because he improved this world through his determination in helping others. A hero doesn’t search for fame and fortune; he dedicates, instead, his entire life to benefit humanity. That makes a person a great one!
