My Hero Learning Circle - Elementary - January 2011

Wonderful stories of heroism from kids around the world.

My Hero Learning Circles is an online global exchange that has My Hero partnered with iEARN.org. Teachers and students from around the world learn about each others’ cultures, communities, countries and of course, their heroes. The world is brought into each of their classrooms and their classrooms into the world. This particular Elementary circle started with 14 classes from USA, Canada, Russia, Egypt and South Korea. The My Hero Project thanks you for all your hard work and perseverance during a circle that saw many schools closed for many days due to intense weather conditions. I encourage everyone who sees this to take some time and click through ALL of the classes in this new archive of heroism as seen through the eyes of our children.

Our class was part of the My Hero Learning Circle. We had the opportunity to video conference with a class in Texas and another class in Canada to share our ideas about who is a hero and why. After discussing what makes a hero and who are heroes, each student chose his or her hero to write about in an essay. Some students chose family member, others chose a sports hero or person from history. We look forward to sharing our essays and learning more about the heroes from the other participants in this project. Laura Neitzer
McConnell students in grades 3-5 participated in the IEARN My Hero Learning Circle. They conducted research to learn about present day and early heroes of Tennessee and documented their stories. Chris Hockert, Rhea Thurman and Charmayne Ayers

The My Hero Project was a great experience for both my students and I, and working in the Learning Circle gave me the support I needed to see the project through! For the past few months, our 3rd Grade class has been learning what makes a person a hero. Through discussion and research they identified the characteristics of various heroes and then they chose their own personal hero to write about. Seeing what other students in other places believe a hero to be, has really helped our class realize that the basic belief in kindness, helping others, and never giving up, crosses nationalities, race, religion, and culture. We have all enjoyed participating in this learning circle. We read many essays, watched some of the short films and researched our heroes before writing our own stories. We also enjoyed a webconference with another of the classes. Thank you to everyone. Jim Lamoureux
