Peter Haynes

by Corinne Haynes, Dublin, Ohio

I believe a hero is a very important person. I think a hero should be very compassionate and loving. They should believe in what is right and stand up for what they believe in. They should do something helpful for others. Heroes should be modest. The person I’m going to tell you about fits all of those traits and more!

Someone that I think is a hero is my Grandpa, Peter Haynes. He lives in Yarmouth, Maine and is a family hero. In 1990, he retired from NYNEX and in 1999 he retired from being a CEO at Consumers Water. Now he is the Chairman of the board of Boys and Girls Club of America, Chairman of the board of Portland Symphony, and the Chairman of Trustees of Maine Medical Center. He has been with the Boys and Girls club for 15 years. In his spare time he likes to play the piano and the organ. He is married and has three boys, Jeff, Chris, and Tim. My grandpa was the youngest of five children including, Charley, Anne, Jerry, and Robert.

Peter Haynes is a great hero because he has quite a problem saying, “No” to charity volunteering! He is a very compassionate person because he can volunteer and is happy doing it. He has won the Herbert Hoover Award and was the first one to be published on TV for making a difference in Maine! Because of the work in volunteering he has accomplished, he has met all of the presidents since Jimmy Carter, works with with Colin Powell (the secretary of state) and has kissed Jennifer Lopez on the cheek while giving her an award. What makes that special though is that he never brags about it. He has helped out with many of the kids at the Boys and Girls Club of America and probably is a hero to many of them! He is a hero to me and many others because of his caring, loving personality!
