Hi

Harriet Tubman

by Gerasimos Moulinos from Brooklyn, New York in United States

Harriet Tubman. One of the most important and influential people during the 1800s. She was a conductor of the Underground Railroad, which was an organization devoted to bringing slaves to freedom during the 1800s before the Civil War. She was a spy and medic during the Civil War. And after her death her stories live on today as she was put in a special place in American history for her bravery. She risked her life fighting to bring people to freedom and give them the chance to be more than just slaves.

Harriet Tubman was born in March 1822 in Maryland as a slave. She faced child labor and physical and mental abuse. She was regularly separated from her family and given whippings and beatings. Three of her siblings were sold away. When she was young, she was struck by a rock in the head which caused many health side effects for the rest of her life. When she grew up she escaped at age 27 to Philadelphia. After this, she worked on the Underground Railroad, which was not an actual railroad but a series of paths and safe houses made to lead people to freedom.

Helping people was important to her because she was beaten and put in slavery as a child, and she knows the pain of being a slave. This inspired determination in her to fight back and inspire people to rise up. Harriet Tubman believed in freedom, equality, compassion, and resilience.

Harriet Tubman displays bravery and resilience in the face of danger to bring others to safety. Toda,y we look at her actions and learn courage, resilience, and the power of coming together to fight a common enemy.
