Helen Keller

by Eloise Jost from Brooklyn, New York in United States

You might think that you can’t get by, only having 3 senses. You might think that you couldn’t live a good life. Well, that is not true, because one person named Helen Keller has done it, and has made it so that so many people can live good lives with disabilities as well. She went blind and deaf at a very young age, but she worked hard, and she remarkably overcame her challenges and started to advocate for disability rights. So many people with disabilities have been helped, and she has inspired people not to give up and to fight for their rights.

When Helen Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, she could see and hear. She fell ill at the age of 19 months, and due to the illness, she lost her hearing and sight. She struggled to communicate, have manners, and socialize growing up as a child, so her mother sought help for her and led them to her teacher, Anne Sullivan. Sullivan helped Helen, and though her methods frustrated her, they eventually led to a breakthrough that helped Helen Keller communicate with the world. As she grew older, she saw that there were not many things open to people with disabilities, and her struggles to communicate as a child led her to start writing books and become a strong advocate for people with disabilities, as well as women’s suffrage and workers' rights.

Helen Keller traveled internationally to promote education and employment for people with disabilities, and gave many motivational speeches everywhere she traveled, trying to improve their lives and give them knowledge that they can live great lives, and do great things. She wrote many books about her experiences being blind and deaf, and also advocating for social change. Helen Keller is courageous, determined, and didn’t overcome her challenges and inspire others to do the same because she wanted fame and fortune, but because she wanted a better world for people who face challenges like hers, and she wants to help, just for the sake of helping. Because of the values that Helen Keller has, she has helped so many people who face challenges like hers.

Helen Keller was kind, smart, and even though she was very challenged by her own disabilities, she found ways to overcome her struggles and live a great life, advocating for people with similar challenges like hers. She wants the best for people, and she doesn’t want people to suffer. She wasn’t always ready to learn, but when she was, she was able to communicate with the world and advocate for people like her. I look up to Helen Keller because even though she could not see or hear, she had the courage to learn to communicate and fight for equal rights for everyone. I hope that I have the bravery and courage for whatever challenges I face, and that I have the courage to fight for what I believe in. Helen Keller can teach us something. Even though she had so many challenges, and even though sometimes she was really frustrated and didn't want to keep trying to learn, she did, and because of that, she was able to help herself, and so many other people to this day.
