Have you ever traveled? Guess what. Nellie Bly traveled around the world in 72 days. Keep in mind this was before airplanes. She did all this on boats, buses and even a camel! She did this to prove that it was possible to circumvent the world in less than 80 days as to tell the public that the book Around the World in 80 Days was beatable. Other than this, Nellie took to exposing terrible conditions, such as when she went undercover at Blackwell's Island Asylum. She did this to expose to the public the terrible conditions that the doctors were keeping patients in, so that people would know.
Elizabeth Jane Cochran was born May 5th,1864, in Pennsylvania. She had 2 older siblings and would go on to have 2 more younger ones. She also had 10 half-siblings from her father's first marriage. Christmases must have been very chaotic.
When Elizabeth was 6, her dad got extremely sick and died. Her dad had not written a will, so none of his land or possessions went to Elizabeth's mom. When Elizabeth heard about the terrible treatment allegedly happening at Blackwell's Island Asylum, she went undercover as she started acting mentally unstable. She talked to herself in the mirror and told people around her that she heard voices. She was admitted to Blackwell's Island and spent 10 days there documenting the harsh conditions and treatment, until fellow news reporters came to take her out. Soon she published her book, Ten Days in a Madhouse, which was to tell the public about the situation. I believe that Elizabeth Cochran/Nellie Bly was a hero because she did stuff for other people, not just herself, and she was determined and very stubborn. I know I look up to her because she would not settle for anything but what she proposed in the first place.
