Wilma Rudolph overcame polio, scarlet fever, and pneumonia. This made most people think that she would be paralyzed. But she beat the odds, and became the first American woman to win the Olympic golds in one Olympics, and because she was the first American woman to win 3 Olympics games in one Olympics. She became very famous, and on top of that she went from paralyzed to the best sprinter, making her legendary.
Wilma Rudolph was born with 21 other siblings and was the 20th out of all of them. Because she had polio, she was paralyzed until 5, but still her left leg was weak and because she was colored, she had little medical resources. So up until she was 12 she had to wear a leg brace. Because of this she had to learn how to run, but she never gave up, and worked super hard to become a runner. Then she ended up at the Olympics. Even though she had a rough start she came back to become a world champ at running.
Wilma Rudolph was the first ever American woman to win 3 golds in one Olympic event. Because she was colored she inspired even more people. Her life story made more and more people interested, because her comeback was so huge, going from paralyzed to Olympic champion at running. She also is a civil rights activist and her program ensures that black girls and women that can’t afford to play sports can play sports.
Wilma Rudolph is super persistent and she never gave up. She kept working super hard, to become a 3 time world champion at running! The thing that most people thought that she would never be able to do. The reason that I look up to her is because she does a sport that I like, but more importantly, it's because she persisted through her own challenges and eventually became a 3 time gold medalist in the Olympics.
