World Poetry day celebrates the diversity of expression through language.
According to the UN, it is meant "to encourage a return to the oral tradition of poetry recitals, to promote the teaching of poetry, to restore a dialogue between poetry and the other arts such as theatre, dance, music and painting, and to support small publishers and create an attractive image of poetry in the media, so that the art of poetry will no longer be considered an outdated form of art, but one which enables society as a whole to regain and assert its identity."
As we can see through the popularity of expressions today like rap music, poetry is not outdated and the oral tradition of expressing feelings and stories through the spoken word is alive and well.
The following collection of Hero essays about poets was curated by MY HERO's Story Editor, Becky Miller. A writer herself, Becky reads and edits approximately 5,000 stories a year, written by students, teachers and life-long learners from the USA, Nepal, Russia, Japan, Senegal, Brazil and more. |
