Ray Charles

by Roshelle from Aiea, Hawaii

Who do you think is a hero? A person from Fantastic 4, spiderman or even superman. People have many heroes, but one of my heroes is Ray Charles. Ray did a lot during his lifetime and has contributed a lot to history. He was very helpful in the civil rights movement. He helped end segregation in places like Georgia. Ray was very inspirational because he was blind and still could play the piano. He brought out great music throughout his years, including the song "Georgia on my Mind", which is now Georgia's anthem. He did many other things for which he is still remembered.

Ray Charles was born on September 23,1930 in Albany. He was an independent person. I like him because he is a person who lost his parents in his boyhood, and also lost his sight, but he never gave up. Ray had confidence that he could do whatever he wanted. He made music that millions of people enjoyed. Even with his blindness, Ray had the ability to impact to millions of people.

Throughout his life, Ray was very determined to succeed. He thought of life as an experience. Being blind was a challenge for him, but he made the best of it. He had many obstacles to face throughout his life, but he pushed through. In his years, Ray picked up some bad habits, such as heroin, but through strong will and determination Ray gave up his addiction to the needle and never touched another one again.

In spite of his blindness, he always had a good sense of humor. Moreover, I think he showed a lot of courage, because he learned how to play the saxophone and the piano in a hospital for blind people and, when his mother died, he moved away in order to forget. As a result, he had a hard time. Was he brave or too thoughtless? To my mind, "one can only be impressed by a blind person who can live by himself."

In conclusion, he died on December 23, 2004 in Beverly Hills, California. He died of a liver disease. Ray Charles is my hero because he never gave up, even though he was tricked and lied to by many people, he still kept doing what he loved to do, which was play music. He had heroes, two of whom were Stevie Wonder and his mom. Ray Charles could be a role model, because he had nothing to help him and he had so much courage. He became one of the most enjoyed stars. Ray is a independent person. We find soul in all of his music. Now he is remembered as a great musician and nobody else gets credit for that. He did it all by himself.
