J.J. Redick

by Jade from Sulphur, Louisiana

If you were to ask me who my hero was, I would probably have a hard time deciding. If I had to choose, though, it would be J.J. Redick. Actually, J.J. Redick is just a nickname from his two older sisters. His real name is Jonathan Clay Redick. He was born on June 24, 1984, in Cookeville, Tennessee, several years after his older twin sisters. In later years, the Redick family moved to Roanoke, Virginia. Then, four years later, his youngest sister was born. J.J. was homeschooled until fifth grade, when he started public school. Since he was a young boy, Redick had been practicing to have the perfect shot, but he was inspired even more by seeing his two older sisters play four years of basketball at Campbell University.

When I watch a game between Duke University and their opponent, J.J. always stands out. You can tell that he enjoys what he is doing, but at the same time he knows what he is doing. In other words, he knows his job and knows not to play around on the court. He knows what he is supposed to do and when he is supposed to do it.

J.J. Redick is definitely a leader of the team. As a guard on a basketball team you have to be a leader, anyway, and Redick has taken up this responsibility. He is also probably the best 3-point shooter that Duke has, as of now. His shots have helped win many of their games. He averages 28.3 points a game. This season, they have only lost four of their games. Although they did not make it to the Final Four, they played very well as a team and had a great chance this season.

What can I say? I'm a senior! (http://media.scout.com/Media/Image/27/275646.jpg)

Redick is now a senior at Duke. He has been playing for the Duke Blue Devils for four years now, and has always been a star of the team. He averaged 15 points a game in his first year alone at Duke. Duke will be sad to see him leave, but at least he will go on to be bigger in the world of basketball. Basketball isn't his only hobby, though. He also likes to write poetry. He writes to relieve stress and just because.

There are different qualities that make J.J. Redick my hero. They include responsibility, leadership, honesty, and loyalty. So remember to show these types of qualities, and you could be somebody's hero, too.
