Richard Davis Winters, a United States Army officer, served as a paratrooper from D-Day to the end of World War II in Easy Company, 101st Airborne Division and earned himself the Distinguished Service Cross. The 101st Airborne Division and their stories became well known after the miniseries Band Of Brothers by HBO was made, which is how many have come to known them.
