Portrait of Rosa Parks by Gail Slockett
It was December 1st, 1955 when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus to a white man. Though it wasn't the first action of this kind, Ms. Parks' act of defiance became an important symbol to the modern Civil Rights Movement and sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Known as an upbeat, positive personality, Ms. Parks is shown here in her natural state... smiling.
