Sandra Schmirler

by Laura Young

Olympics Hero

Sandra Schmirler loved her family very much. She was married and had two daughters Jenne and Sara. She was born in 1964. Sandra had said many words and done many deeds to make her a hero.

When Sandra was a child she wanted to play hockey but there was not enough girls to make a team. So instead she started curling. Her dream was to "wear the green" of the Saskatchewan provincial team, and she accomplished that and much more.

Sandra Schmirler made it to the top podium of the Olympic standings. Schmirler was also the first ever to win a gold medal in Canada. Then it happened just about 6 months after her father passed away from cancer, she was diagnosed.

Sandra fought it out and went on with her life as normal as she could. She was very courageous and determined to keep living a normal life. Sandra died in year 2000 after struggling for so long and trying to live a normal life. Everyone will now remember Sandra as the greatest curler, and also a person with a lot of courage.

I believe that Sandra Schmirler was a wonderful person I think that she did not deserve to die at such a young age and she definitely qualifies as a hero in my book. I have been in curling for 7 years now and she is who I look up to. Sandra Schmirler is my hero.
