The so-called "Cobbe" portrait is named after the family of its Irish owner, an art restorer. Evidence suggests it might well be the long-lost portrait of poet and playwright, William Shakespeare, (1564 - 1616) painted from real life. Arguably the English language's finest writer, "The Bard's" surviving work consists chiefly of 38 plays, 154 sonnets and 2 epic narrative poems. Shakespeare's plays remain among the world's most popular to this day.
