By the time he was old enough to attend school, the already independent Lee earned the nickname his mother had given him as an infant: Spike--an allusion to his toughness. Shelton Jackson Lee was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on the eve of the civil rights era. His mother, Jacquelyn, impacted her children with a schoolteacher's enthusiasm for black art and literature. A hero must posses traits such as confidence and empathy. Spike Lee had both of these traits and helped many people and the black community. Spike Lee is a hero because he used his popularity to do good things for his community and fight for civil rights.

He helped disadvantaged people and fought for equal rights between cultures. "Lee's feature film debut was She's Gotta Have It (1986), a prismatic character study about the love life of a contemporary black woman. Establishing a career-long pattern, Lee not only wrote, produced, directed, and edited the film but also played a key supporting role. Lee's awareness of his African American identity was established at an early age" ("Spike Lee."). At a young age spikes parents made sure he was aware of his African American identity. His parents made sure to inform him and help him through tough things that were going to happen because his African American identity. Spike didnt want this to happen to other people so he decided to make a change. ”I consider him, forget black and white, one of the most original young film makers in the world," ("Spike Lee." UXL). He gave back to his community with the money he made from his films. He also was a mentor to many young people and helped the black community. All in all Spike Lee gave back to his community and helped influence many young people.

Spike fought for civil rights and used his popularity to help with that. He also did good for his community. During his youth Lee's leadership ability began to emerge. For neighborhood sports, Lee was not necessarily the best player but was the motivational leader of the team.(”"Spike Lee.") when he was young he stood out as a leader and a motivator n the following years, he continued to produce idiosyncratic and well-crafted films about the black experience.”(Chrisman, Robert. He was a very influential person and some day i wish to be like him. Confident and careful towards the disadvanteged. He helped many people and i look up to him
