My artwork focuses on King Shaka Zulu and Chief Dingiswayo, two historical figures whose relationship shaped the rise of the Zulu kingdom. I chose these two leaders because both played heroic roles within the Zulu community individually and together.
Although Shaka is widely celebrated for his military innovations and leadership, my artwork highlights that Dingiswayo was a crucial influence, guiding Shaka during his early development. Without Dingiswayo’s mentorship, support, and belief in Shaka’s abilities, Shaka may never have become the leader we know today. Their stories are deeply connected, and their impact on each other is what inspired this piece.
I used paint to create a symbolic depiction of their journey. Through simplified stick figures, I tell the story of their growth, their meeting, and the powerful leadership that emerged from their connection. I also included the bull horn formation, a military strategy strongly associated with Shaka. Although Dingiswayo did not create this formation, its inclusion shows how Shaka built on the foundations laid by Dingiswayo and ultimately transformed Zulu warfare.
The red paint splashes represent blood, symbolising the battles, sacrifices, and struggles that shaped their success. They remind viewers that the greatness of the Zulu nation was not simply inherited it was earned through conflict, courage, and determination.
Overall, my artwork explores how mentorship, leadership, and shared history can shape heroes. It honours not only Shaka as a legendary figure but also Dingiswayo, whose guidance and influence were essential to Shaka’s rise
