The Most Heroic Person I Know

by Preston Jackson from Charlotte, NC

What is a hero? In my world, a hero isn’t just someone who flies around in a cape and swoops in to save people at the last moment like in those Marvel cartoons. A hero is someone who does great things without begging for recognition. A hero is also someone who saves people in different ways throughout their every day walk. My hero is a beautiful representation of all of these traits. My hero is someone who is faithful, someone who is a servant of God, and someone who humble. My hero is Mr. Schulz, and he possesses all of these traits.

Mr. Schulz is a man of many traits, but the first one stands out to me. This is his true faith in God. When he had no money left to help provide for his family, he prayed to the Lord that he would somehow, someway find a way to make money for food and necessities. About five minutes later, there was a light tap on the wooden door. Mr. Schulz opened the door and, right outside it, there was a mailman with an envelope in his hand. The mailman said to Mr. Schulz, ”There was a lost check in the mail and we have no idea whose it is.” He reached out the hand with the check in it and asked,  “Would you perhaps be in need of money?” Mr Schulz was so overjoyed that he tried to shout out a loud YES, but nothing came out. He didn't want to wait for his voice to regenerate, so he just nodded vigorously. The mailman handed Mr. Schulz the check and closed the door. Mr. Schulz couldn't wait to tell the rest of the family. You see, he always clings hard to Matthew 7:7 which says, “Ask and it shall be given to you”. Not for one second did Mr. Schulz let lose his faith in God.

The second trait that stands out to me, is his servant like ways towards God. About a year ago, Mr. Schulz was out sitting on the front porch when a truck rolled by that said “Microsoft” on it. For some odd reason, the back of the truck was wide open... and as the truck rolled by, a gigantic box fell out the back. Mr Schultz tried to grab it and catch up to the truck, but he couldn't. He looked at the box and saw that it said Microsoft PC on the side. The box was so big, he knew it had to be a brand new computer. Mr. Schulz could have easily just kept the computer for himself, but being the servant of God that he is, he lightly placed the new computer in the trunk of his car and started driving to the Microsoft Store. Once he got to the establishment, he went up to the lady at the front desk and gave it to her. It would have been very hard to return the computer in that situation. The devil tried to tempt Mr. Schulz, but he refused to give in.

The third trait that definitely stands out to me is his extreme humility. Mr Schulz had just got his new guitar as a gift from his wife. He took it to school to show his class and play songs for them. He went to the bathroom and when he came back, the guitar was in the exact same place it was before...but the guitar was broken. He was so angry; he wanted to find whoever did this and beat them up, but God told him to stay humble and to control his attitude. The whole rest of the week, he didn’t get mad or try to investigate who broke his brand spankin' new guitar. After about a week and a half after the mystery man broke the guitar, he walked into the classroom on a gloomy Wednesday morning and right there -- in the middle of the classroom -- there was a shiny new guitar. Mr. Schulz was so overjoyed and so glad he didn’t get mad at anybody. To this day, Mr. Schulz still doesn’t know who gave him the guitar. Mr. Schulz did a great job of staying humble and it ended up turning out good for him.

All in all, Mr. Schulz is a very Godly man who possesses many traits. He is such a successful person in life, and all he had to do was listen to God. He is the best example for all the traits that I just shared. Mr. Schulz was able to be a hero by having faith in God when he had no money. He was able to be a hero when he used his servant like attitude to bring the computer back to the store. He was a hero when his guitar got broken and God told him to stay humble -- as of which he did --. That is the person that I look up to… Mr. Schulz.
