My artwork depicts a wooden cross rising from the ocean, crowned with thorns, with warm sunset clouds glowing in the background. I created this piece to explore the idea of faith as a source of strength, guidance, and renewal. The ocean represents the challenges, uncertainty, and overwhelming moments we face in life, while the cross emerging from the water symbolizes hope rising above difficulty. The crown of thorns is a reminder of sacrifice, resilience, and unconditional love.
This painting was inspired by the quote from Lauryn Hill: “Without the power of God behind everything I do, I really am completely inadequate.” These words helped guide the tone and message of my artwork. They reflect the idea that human strength alone is not always enough, and that faith can be a grounding force that gives meaning and direction.
I also drew inspiration from several Bible verses that relate to strength, courage, and trust. Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” connects directly to the image of the cross rising powerfully from the ocean. Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble,” is reflected in the ocean waves that surround the cross but cannot overpower it. Finally, Isaiah 43:2, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you,” inspired the choice of water as a key element, representing God’s presence through life’s storms.
The warm sunset colours in the sky symbolize peace after hardship light breaking through darkness. Overall, this artwork expresses my belief that strength doesn’t come from perfection or self reliance, but from faith, guidance, and the reassurance that we are never alone.
