Mary Anning, born in Dorset, England on May 21, 1799, is credited as one of the first people to discover evidence of the existence of dinosaurs. What makes her story even more remarkable is that she lived at a time when women were rarely educated and were not considered capable of being scientists. Her journey began when she was only twelve years old and discovered the complete skeleton of an ichthyosaur. Later, she also unearthed the skeleton of a plesiosaurus, a type of marine reptile. Mary went on to specialize in marine fossils and is now recognized as one of the most important figures in the history of science. I find it incredible that she made such groundbreaking discoveries at the same age I am now—just twelve. Thinking about all the opportunities I have today compared to what she had makes me want to work harder and be more grateful. Mary Anning truly inspires me.She discovered evidence of dinosaurs that lived over two hundred million years ago, which is why I included two fossils in my drawing. Behind these fossils, I drew a robot dinosaur to represent the future and how technology will continue to evolve. Between the two dinosaurs, I added a clock to symbolize time—our past, present, and future. My drawing is like a time machine: it travels from the age of the dinosaurs, to Mary Anning’s era, and into a future shaped by technology, robotics, and AI. Mary Anning unraveled the world’s secrets through her curiosity about geology, fossils, and Earth’s history. I used black and white watercolor with a slight hint of color to capture the feeling of time and history in my artwork
