Theodor Seuss Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss)

by Sam from montvale

Three ways to explain Dr. Seuss are brilliant, adventurous, and respectful of children. Dr. Seuss did not only write children's books for four generations, but in the process he helped millions of kids learn how to read. Theodor Seuss Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 2,1904. His father, who worked at the zoo was a very big influence in Dr. Seuss's life because the zoo gave him ideas for his drawings or cartoons.

While at Dartmouth College, he majored in English and also contributed cartoons to the campus humor magazine. He eventually became the editor. After graduating from Dartmouth College, Dr. Seuss went onto Oxford university to try and get his doctorate in literature.

dr. Seuss married Helen Palmer in 1927. she was a teacher he had met at Oxford University. She was the one who persuaded dr. Seuss to give up on teaching and make drawing his career. She was not only a big influence on him she also managed his work through out his career.

Dr. Seuss started contributing cartoons to magazines in college, and over the years of his early drawing career, he drew magazines like Vanity Fair, Liberty, Judge and many others. He first became famous whne he came up with the cartoon, The Flit. Dr. Seuss did not only write children's books, but he made films like, "Hitler Lives" and "Design for Death." Both films won Acedemy Awards in 1946 and 1947. Another cartoon he made "Gerald McBoing Boing" won an Oscar in 1951. Dr. Seuss's later work like "Oh the Places You'll Go!" Which talks about the difficulties of getting through life. Also, another book he did later in his career was "You're Only Old Once!" In this book he talks about the problems of being old. Most of Dr. Seuss's later books had great morals.

Dr. Seuss always used to say, "Children want the same thing we want. To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained and delighted." Not only did Dr. Seuss accomplish all of that, but Dr. Seuss succeeded as a person. In his career with childrens books, he wrote 47 books in all and twenty were translated into twenty different lauguages. Dr. Seuss is not only a hero in my eyes, but he is a hero in many others as well.
