Untamed Rhymes: Poems to Celebrate Sea Creatures
There once were lions in London
There once were animals at the zoo
But now there are no animals
What are we to do?
My name is Evan and I love animals of all kinds
So I imagined a world where animals live only in the mind
For the largest mammal on Earth will soon be a cow
That’s why we need to care for our animals starting right now!
I’m starting with sharks and creatures of the sea
Because sea creatures are awesome. Don’t you agree?
When sharks circle beneath you, don’t dive beneath!
You have to watch out for their 67 teeth!
Bamboo sharks waddle ‘cross the bottom of the sea
Just like a baby on a crawling spree
What is this mysterious shadow inside a purse?
It’s a baby epaulette shark with its egg yolk nurse!
Port Jackson sharks lay spiral eggs
To hide them in rocks with nooks and craigs
Only 9% of Port Jackson shark eggs survive after birth
This is a mark of what they’re worth
Did you know sharks yawn when they’re tired
Luckily they don’t have to work or they’d be fired
Goblin sharks are lonely; no one wants to be their friend
With the darkness they do blend
Here they hide in the Midnight Zone
They’re cartilage only; no bones to groan
The blobfish needs water pressure to give him shape
On land he looks like he lost his cape
Or maybe an old man who’s been living off ice cream and mac ‘n cheese
I think his nose is about to make him sneeze
These bites were created by a cookie cutter shark
He’s not a creature you want to meet in the dark
Did you know cookie cutters eat their own teeth for lunch?
This is how they get a vitamin and mineral crunch
Betty the Betta Fish doesn’t eat her own spawn
She only eats unfertilized eggs to keep infection from her lawn
My mantis shrimp's fists are so lightning fast
They make the sea around them boil from the shock of the blast
So these are just a few rhymes from my mind
I’ll share with you more when we meet next time!
