Portrait of the Artist's Mother
by Vincent Van Gogh (1853 - 1890)
Painting
During the same month that he traded self-portraits with master painters Paul Gauguin, Emile Bernard and Charles Laval, Van Gogh painted this portrait of his mother from a black and white photograph.
Vincent would write in a letter to his brother, "I cannot stand the colorless photograph and I am trying to do one that is in a harmony of color, as I see her in my memory."
