Lucie Johnson Scruggs was born into slavery and became a writer and educator.

Miss Martha B. Briggs

By: Dr. Lawson A. Scruggs
Martha B. Briggs taught former slaves to read and write, was a principal at Anthony Bowen Elementary School, and later trained teachers at Howard University.
