Description

Through the experiences of NorCal paddler Kayla Lopez, viewers will get a first-hand look at her connection to her beloved "soul river", the Trinity River in Northwest California. Alongside Kayla, you'll meet Steve Evans, CalWild's Wild Rivers Director, who is working tirelessly to permanently protect California's rivers alongside U.S. Congressman Jared Huffman – who has been instrumental in getting the Northwest California Wilderness Recreation and Working Forests Act passed in Congress. The National System protects less than 1% of the country’s rivers and streams – a figure so low that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service considers free-flowing rivers to be endangered ecosystems. In California, about 2,100 miles of rivers and streams are protected in the National System (~2% of the state’s waterways). There is also a state-managed Wild & Scenic River System in California, with extensive overlap between federal and state protection. Based on federal agency assessments, CalWild estimates that there are about 4,500 miles of rivers and streams in California that are eligible for national and state protection, which is where '6,000 Miles' comes from in the title of the film. It is our goal to designate 6,000 miles total by 2028. With breathtaking visuals and insightful commentary, 6,000 Miles is a must-see film for anyone who cares about the effects of climate change on our public lands, outdoor recreation, equitable access, and most importantly the future of our wild and precious places.
