Anne Frank

by Ariel from North Carolina

"I simply can't build my hopes on a foundation of confusion, misery and death... I think... peace and tranquillity will return again."

Anne Frank was hiding in a Secret Annex with her family for almost two years with four others: Johannes Kleiman, Victor Kugler, Jan Gies, and Miep Gies. Those four had previously helped to prepare the hiding place and smuggled food and clothing for the Franks at great risk.

Anne, her family and colleagues were located in an apartment attic above a business building. Since they were above a business, they had to be quiet and stay isolated from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM so nobody could catch them. Soon after, a Dutch-German had told the Gestapo that there were still 'some Jews' in the building and then they were captured. They were allowed five minutes to grab all of their belongings and then were on their way to the camps. When the Franks left, Anne never took her diary, she just looked at her belongings and walked away.

When the Franks and the four colleagues arrived to their camps, Anne and Margo, Anne's older sister, died of typhus, both one month apart from death. Edith, Anne's mother, had died from starvation one day before the camp was liberated. Otto Frank, Annes's father, was the only one to survive the camp. When the camps were liberated, one of the colleagues, Miep Gies, kept Annes' diary. Soon after the war, it was published in many different languages across the world and taught to Middle and High School students.

By writing such a famous diary, Anne Frank had helped the world understand the many Jews that have been killed in the Holocaust were real citizens - that they were just like us. When you think of the Holocaust, you think of Anne Frank. She has touched millions of people and achieved equality between all people.

Anne Frank had patience, confidence, bravery, and was very strong for such a young girl. Many are proud and amazed at what she did with just a small book of thoughts and memories. If she was alive this very day, she could be someone known for her life, not her death.
