Guion S. Bluford

by Kevin Stauss from Wilmington

Guion (Guy-On) was born on November 22, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and is still living as of February 2004. Guy was the 1st African American to go to space.

If you thought that Guion Bluford made straight A's at school, you're wrong. His high school counselor even encouraged him to learn a trade, since he didn't think he was "college material". His parents said that he wasn't ready to get a job. Guion thought that grades do not always affect what job you can get. He went to college and did well there instead. He then became an astronaut.

Guion went to school at Overbrook High School and Penn State. His hobbies are Boy Scouts, jogging, racquetball, handball, tennis, reading, and photography.

Guion has 2 brothers, his mother (Lolita), his father (Guion Sr.), and his wife (Linda Tull).

According to another source on line called DOMINION...Guion Bluford "was taught by his parents to reach for the stars, literally. His mother was a teacher and his father an inventor and mechanical engineer. One of three sons, Dr. Bluford’s interest in space and aviation began as a child, when he constructed model airplanes."
