Jacques-Yves Cousteau was a French Oceanographer. He was born in Saint-Andre-de-Dubzac, France, to Daniel and Elizabeth Cousteau on June 11, 1910. He married Simone Melchoir in 1937. They had two sons Jean-Michael and Phillipe.

In 1939 Jacques fought for the French in World War II were he received several medals. With the help of French engineer Emile Gagnan, they perfected the aqua lung or self contained underwater breathing apparatus (scuba), which allows a diver to stay under water for several hours. In 1950 Jacques became president of the French Oceanographic Campaigns. He has also been in many videos and has written a few books.

He spent most of his time on a boat, but he was from France. Jacques-Yves Cousteau died on June 25, 1997.
Jacques-Yves Cousteau lived from 1910-1997.
He is important to me because he has made a lot of advancements for the field of work I would like to pursue. If he hadn’t invented scuba how would marine biologist and oceanographers explore the world beneath the surface of the ocean.
