My hero is Cristobal Colon because he discovered America, the land where I live -- and because if he hadn’t discovered this land, I might not be writing this today. That’s why I give thanks for his discovery of this wonderful land.

He was born in Genoa in 1451. He was the son of a wool merchant and weaver. His brother, Bartholomew, was a cartographer in Lisbon, and in 1495 his brother moved to Spain.

Cristobal swam because his boat sunk in the battle with Portugal. He made a deal with the kings that if he found the new land, he would give all the territory to them and they would give him money -- because he knew in his heart that there were new lands to discover. So he arrived in 3 ships: La Nina, La Pinta and La Santa Maria.

On November 14th, 1492, he arrived in the Antillas and so went the discovery of the "New World," which nowadays it is called America. Now Spain had more territory for its military safety, more riches, and its people could have more work, and consequently, could progress.

I consider him a hero because of his knowledge as an explorer of the territories, not as a conquistador. Also, now, many people live in this continent with freedom and have a great place to live. These are the reason I consider him a hero: because he was an important explorer, and because of his discovery.

He also was intelligent, he was poor, but when he went to America he helped his family progress. His physical description was that he was tall, thin, and had white hair.

In conclusion, if Cristobal Colon hadn’t discovered America I wouldn’t be here talking about a great person whose knowledge and existance I am thankful for. All the people that live in this treasure, this new continent named America, should be thankful for the man, the hero, Cristobal Colon.
