It's time we stopped ignoring the environment. Let's not let another election go by without making this a high priority. is a quote by a Canadian hero who has dedicated his life to letting everyone know what we have done to the earth and most importantly how we can fix it. My hero is Dr. David Suzuki, speaker, geneticist, writer, father, husband, award winner, earth keeper and educator.

Dr. Suzuki was born in British Columbia on March 24, 1936 to Japanese parents, father Kaoru and mother Setsu and the family spent time in an internment camp in British Columbia during the end of World War II. After the War they were ordered to resettle east of the Rocky Mountains so they moved to Ontario. As a youth and adult, David's hero was his father who taught him a love of nature through camping and fishing trips. David graduated from Amherst University, USA in 1958 with an Honours in Biology and then a PHD in Zoology from the University of Chicago in 1961. He is recognized around the world to this day as an authority in sustainable ecology. His tremendous accomplishments include what his father taught him which was to speak to people and make them understand the passions of caring for nature. "The Nature of Things" is one of his most memorable accomplishments as he hosted this award winning television program teaching us all about science and ecology.

My hero is a generous man who has dedicated his life to the values he thinks is right and showed respect to his parents by educating himself and others. Because of his gift of public speaking, Dr.Suzuki has kept writing books, challenging politicians and countries to do better to protect and reverse the damages to the environment even at the age of 75. Some of his books that are written for children and his websites are informing everyone of ways everyone can challenge governments and organizations to change the harmful practises that are endangering our water systems and land systems.

The character traits that David Suzuki displays are his gift of public speaking that started during his high school years when he became President of the student council and being very unpopular, quickly won over the students with his ability to speak well. He also has passion, courage and determination that has ruled his life. This is obvious as he has won hundreds of awards like The Order of Canada and a United Nations Award for his eight part series "A Planet For The Taking". He and his wife Tara Cullis, founded the David Suzuki Foundation in 1990 after his fascinating radio talk show that generated thousands of responses from the public.

I am inspired and influenced by Dr. David Suzuki daily to do my part to reduce my ecological footprint by conscientiously caring for nature in my community through recycling, composting garden and kitchen waste, by educating people to ban the use of pesticides and to use water wisely. I am also influenced to get a great education and read frequently about issues such as the articles that are included in the local newspaper written by David Suzuki about climate change lessons or ethical standards. I also promote a backyard habitat to encourage wildlife to exist around my home.

In conclusion, I have become more aware of the need to look after our environment and reverse the damage that has been done over many years. Dr. Suzuki is an honourable hero who is a fantastic example for youth to join in the journey to stopping climate change.
