David Lewis

by Mackenzie from Fredericksburg

Some people ask me who my hero is, and each time they ask, I reply, “I don’t know. I haven’t really thought about it.” Now that I had time to think about it, I realized that my hero is someone not most people would expect me to pick. Some people thought I would pick an actor or I would pick a musician, but I wanted to pick someone who made an impact on my life. And that someone is my friend, eighteen-year-old David Lewis.

David Lewis is a senior at his school, getting ready to go off to college. He has a great group of friends and is always seen with a smile on his face or joking around with good buddies. People have asked me why I picked him as my hero, and I can simply say, it is the fact that no matter what happens to him, he has a smile on his face and a great attitude.

David is an athletic student at his school. He ran cross country in the fall, swam in the winter, and played lacrosse in the spring. He, like a lot of other people in school, thought he would finish out his senior year by playing lacrosse. But there was a sudden turn of events and David found that he couldn’t finish the season because of a broken collar bone.

An injury doesn’t stop him from being his normal happy self. Although he can’t play lacrosse, he goes to every practice and every home game to cheer his friends and teammates on. He helps them in some problem areas and watches as they improve.

An injury doesn’t stop him from being his kind self towards everyone he meets. I never really got a chance to get to know David until this year and I regret it. He is very kind to me and, for that, I am grateful because I never met anyone that nice to me. Because of this, he is my hero. Having a hero as q friend may seem weird to some people, but it’s normal to me. He is always there to talk to me about small things: what’s happening in my day, how I’ve been, and what I’ve been up to, to name a few. I gladly respond to these questions because I feel important to other people, not including my family. His attitude is what helps him have a strong bond with his younger brother. Whenever I see them together I notice that they both have smiles on their faces and are laughing together like good siblings should. There is never a time when I see him mad at his brother and I know that there will never be a time when he is truly angry with him.

All of these qualities and a lot of others is what made me see David in this way. His kindness reminds me a lot of my father, and that’s another reason why he’s my hero. It’s like I have my dad with me though the whole school day so I don’t have to miss him as much.

Having David around made me realize that I’m really going to miss him when he goes off to college, but I know a part of him will stay with me forever. He got accepted into Lynchburg, among other schools, and if he goes there he can come back to visit my school in his free time because it’s not that far away. Sure, I’m going to miss him, but I know I’ll see him from time to time in the near future.
