Florence Nightingale

by Tsai from Taipei

Florence Nightingale, a woman who is famous for her kindness, courage, and the one of the dedication in the nursing profession, is my hero. Born in a generation almost peace, the war seems to be a faraway world in my life, but there are some conflicts still occurring in other countries in places where we can't see. Looking back to history, the most we note is brute means, or the grieved death toll. However, the shadow won't be just a shadow, the sunshine in the side still. There is a saying goes that a candle lights others and consumes itself. In the Crimean War, Nightingale devoted all her life to serving and helping the sufferers in the war. She is like a candle - she consumes herself to light the way for others.

When Nightingale was young, she lived in an upper class family, but there was a thought haunting her because she considered that the days were too dull spiritually. It's said that Nightingale had heard God's call, which made her go on a way in nursing. Unfortunately, nursing was seen as the worst profession in that era, so that Nightingale's decision was opposed by her family and the society. In spite of the opposition from many ways, Nightingale still insisted on the path she chose, and dedicated her life to improving nursing and upgrading the status of women.

As the saying goes, "The darkest nights produce the brightest stars." Without doubt, Nightingale is the brightest star I've ever seen. Nightingale become my hero not only because she made the world better but also because she adhered to her dream. As an ordinary person I lived, maybe I can't do anything that can make me be remembered in future, but I am willing to strive for the life what I want. I think only when the mind is strong enough can we attempt to be the light in the dark, and trying hard not to be changed or be extinguished.
