Mother Teresa
On August 28th, 1910 in Skopje, Macedonia, a baby girl named Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu (later known as Mother Teresa) was born. She died at the age of 87 on September 5th, 1997 in Calcutta, India. Mother Teresa was famous for her kind and loving heart, all of the charity work she did and so much more. I think Mother Teresa is worth knowing about because she played an incredible role in helping people in poor countries.

"I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun."-Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa lived in Skopje, Macedonia all of her childhood. At the age of 12, she felt strongly about the calling of God. At the age of 18 she left her home in Skopje to join the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns with missions in India. In the year of 1931 on May 24th, she took her initial vows as a nun. From 1931 to 1948 she taught at St.Mary's High School in Calcutta. In 1948, she requested and was granted permission from her superiors to begin her life's work. This was when she began to devote herself to working with the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta. Mother Teresa also held the position that abortion was the greatest destroyer of peace in the world. Although she had no money to realize her vision, Mother Teresa started an open air school for the children in the slums.

"I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things." -Mother Teresa

On October 7th, 1950 Mother Teresa was granted permission from Holy See which "is the episcopal jurisdiction of the Catholic Church in Rome" ("http://en.wikipedia.org") to start her own charity, The Missionaries of Charity. The main task of the organization was to care and love those people that nobody wanted to look after. "In 1965, The Missionaries of Charity became an International Religious Family by a decree of Pope Paul VI" (http://www.nobelprize.org.") In the following years, she won many awards such as Nobel Peace Prize, Bharat Ratna, Presidential Medal of Freedom, Padma Shri, Balzan Prize, Jawaharlal Nehru Award, Pacem in Terris Award, Pope John XXIII Peace Prize, Albert Schweitzer International Prize, Golden Honor of the Nation, Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding, Ramon Magsaysay Award for Peace and International Understanding.

"But a person that is shut out, that feels unwanted, unloved, terrified, the person that has been thrown out from society- that poverty is so hurtable and so much more, and I find that very difficult "- Mother Teresa

I chose Mother Teresa as my hero simply because she was a hero. She saved many lives and her charities are still making a difference in peoples lives as well as saving many lives still today. Even though she only stood 1.52m (4ft. 11in.) tall, she made a huge and mighty impact on the world. Many people's lives would be different if Mother Teresa did not step up and do what she did. Mother Teresa set out to achieve many goals such as to help the poor and hungry and to make the world a better place for them.

Mother Teresa is one of those figures that no matter what your religious beliefs, country of residence or what era you live in it is quite likely that you have heard of her or her passions and works. It is quite possible that the world will never find another soul quite like Mother Teresa. I believe that the world is a better place because of the dedication and devotion of Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu.
