Robert Edwin Peary

by Ken from Arcadia

Robert Edwin Peary is a hero to a lot of people. He is the discoverer of the North Pole and led many expeditions to the north. He also led an interesting life. I look up to R.E. Peary like many others.

Robert Edwin Peary is not a very famous person so I’m going tell you some information about him. He was born in Pennsylvania on May 6, 1856. He was at the top of his class in Bowdoin College. His skills in surveying were very good. In 1881, he served in the navy as a civil engineer in Nicaragua. But the thing that makes him famous is that he was an explorer. He died on February 20, 1920.

R. E. Peary led many expeditions to the North. The first one he made was in 1886. He went to Greenland in that expedition. Five years later he went back to Greenland again. He went down the northeast coast on a long sled journey. In 1898 he went to find the North Pole with the help of Matthew Henson and four Eskimos. He only made it to lat. 84 17’N. He set out again in 1909 and finally found the North Pole on April 6.

The discovery of the North Pole affected science very much. The discovery led scientists and researchers to an amazing fact that 55 million years ago, the Arctic had a climate the same as Miami, Florida. They also found out that alligators lived there too. Researchers also found out that a simple fern called Azolla sucked down carbon dioxides that are responsible for the warmth.

Robert E. Peary led an interesting life and led many expeditions. Science was affected by his discoveries at the North Pole. I look up to R. E. Peary like many others.
