"I think I'm one of the most fortunate people in the world. I travel around looking for the best waves and appreciate it every second"(Machado). there is a lot more to him than traveling around, surfing on beaches, and getting paid for it. Rob Machado was born on October 16th 1973, In Sydney Australia. He has a wife named Sophie Machado as well as a 3 year old son with 2 other kids from a previous marriage (Josephson). Machado's continuous involvement in environmental awareness inspires kids and adults all around the world to help go green. Not only that but it helps schools all go green for the environment (Harris). Many people who are considered heroes have dedication and are an inspiration to people. Rob Machado lives a very laid back lifestyle while still making money and time for his family. Machado might not inspire everyone but he inspires some people with his love for the environment and the dedication he has to make it better.

Machado wasn't always a surfer, but when he first started he loved it so much that he put all of his time and dedication into it. He started surfing in kids' leagues and then eventually moved up to the men's division. His dedication can be seen throughout his everyday life. Since Machado lives in Cardiff, he checks out the waves when he wakes up and then spends hours out on the water. "Rob continued to improve and by the time he was sixteen, he had started surfing in contests sponsored by the Professional Surfing Tour." (Josephson) Being dedicated to something is when you are committed to a task such as Machado was with his surfing. He spent many hours of every single day in the water so that he could become one of the greatest. Originally Machado didn't expect to make it so far but because he put so much dedication and energy into it, he made it exactly where he deserved to be. Our heroes dedication isn't always seen as doing something they love for a long period of time and becoming famous from it, but to me this is heroic. Because Rob put so much time and effort into this he made it to the top. Although he hasn't saved anyone's life like the typical hero and he's not a well known name outside of the surfing community he can still be considered a hero. Different sources make me think differently about him than everyone else who might see Machado as just another pro surfer.  "Supported environmental education campaigns such as Cardiff Ocean Week to teach students how to contribute to a healthy earth" (Machado) Instead of trying to keep the environment safe by himself he decided to share his passion and love with others so that he could get help and support with his goals. He wanted other people to have the same dedication as he does with this campaign and the Rob Machado Foundation.

Machado was not born a surfer, he worked. He worked just as long and hard as anyone else who wants something in their lives. "Rob Machado is one of the world's most recognizable surfers as well as a committed environmentalist."(Machado) Instead of getting caught up in his career and fame he takes it to another level and decides to use it for the better. He started a campaign called The Rob Machado Foundation which helps schools and students to stay more green and keep the environment safe. This shows how he can inspire others because large groups of students at these schools have taken part in The Rob Machado Foundation because he has inspired people to know what environment they want around them and on their beaches. Times when people mention famous people they automatically assume they are more into themselves than everything around them. Rob Machado is very different from that stereotype. He should be an inspiration to young people because not only did he teach himself how to be one of the greatest, Rob wants to put the world at its greatest by caring more about the environment than his ego.  "So after doing that for ten years, to all of a sudden have it stripped from me." (Machado). Rob Machado went through a moment in his life where everything changed. With a broken hand earlier in the season he was not able to surf in the competition of his life that would get him to carry on with his career as one of the best surfers. After being denied for this competition he decided to take action and find some way to be included and not kill his career. This is inspiring because unlike other people he saw what he wanted and would get there no matter what it would take. Thinking of firefighter or a police officers who save lives, they are a hero. A hero to me is also someone who sees what they want and goes for it.

With a laid back lifestyle and still making money and time for his family, Machado also is dedicated to making things in the environment better and more enjoyable for all people. While living life easily he can inspire people to care for the things they want and love. It may be hard for others to notice but looking closer at his lifestyle and what Machado chooses to do with his time, it's easy to see how he could be a hero. Within his life things have happened where he could've just given up on his career as a surfer but he doesn't he sticks with what he loves. He also shows a dedication for what he loves, The ocean and environment. Starting up the Rob Machado Foundation has helped schools in many places increase the healthiness of the environment and keep everything protected and safe. Rob Machado is my idol. He lives a very laid back life while still doing things he loves and helping others out. His dedication for surfing from beginning to right now has inspired me to put my all into everything I do so that I can be the best. Hopefully someday I will be able to inspire others to support the same things I care for.  "He'd won eight world tour events, including the 1994 Marui Pro in Japan, the 1995 and 2001 U.S. Open, and the 2000 Pipeline Masters; he also won the 1995 Billabong Challenge in Western Australia. He added a third U.S. Open title in 2006"(Warshaw). Even after he didn't make it in 2002 he won a title in 2006. Reading this quote may make Machado seem a little cocky and full of himself but if you read between the lines you can see why he says this. Machado spent the time in between working to be better so that he could make it and so that he could get to the spot he wanted to be at. I hope that someday I can put my mind to something I want to accomplish, and go for it and hopefully I can succeed as well as Machado did.
