Rachel Carson was an American conservationist and marine biologist but it was her writing for which she is most celebrated. Carson's "Sea Trilogy",
The Sea Around Us, The Edge of the Sea, and
Under the Sea Wind, all best-sellers, was a comprehensive study of ocean life, from deep-see to shore that garnered her widespread recognition and critical acclaim.
But it was her study of the imperiling effects of pesticide use, Silent Spring, for which she is best remembered. Initially met with fierce criticism from the lucrative pesticide industry and its lobbyists in Washington DC, the scientifically peer reviewedSilent Spring would become an environmental classic that is widely recognized as giving birth to the Environmental Protection Agency as well as the modern environmental movement.
