Laurie Skreslet (I made it.)

On October 5th 1982 Laurie Skreslet became the first Canadian to reach the summit of Mount Everest at the age of 22. Laurie Skreslet was born and raised in Calgary. His family was very protective because he was an only child. He had no favourite subject in school. Laurie Skreslet wanted to be a mountain climber when he was little.

Laurie Skreslet's life was remarkable and admirable because he was the first Canadian to climb Mount Everest. He was brave, strong and adventurous, that’s what pushed him up to the summit of Everest. It was difficult for him to always be brave because two people died on the climb on Everest. One of the helpful qualities is strength because that’s what helped him make it to the top. Laurie Skreslet never made any major mistakes or bad decisions. I learned about Laurie Skreslet being the first Canadian to climb Mount Everest, and the great thing is he was a Calgarian and I live in Calgary. Laurie Skreslet is still well known especially in Calgary. I don’t think he had enemies. Laurie Skreslet had his team of climbers support and Calgarians' support. Laurie Skreslet didn’t follow any certain beliefs or rules. He is one of my heroes because he was determined to reach the top of Everest, kind to others and brave enough to take on the challenge to climb Everest. Laurie Skreslet may not be considered a celebrity because he is not very famous throughout the world, but he is still my hero. Laurie Skreslet has lived in Calgary his whole life and continues to teach others about climbing. He continues to lead expeditions thoughout the world.

Laurie Skreslet has not won any awards, but has the distinction of being the first Canadian to climb Everest. He has over 30 years of experience as a mountaineer all over the world. Laurie Skreslet is certified with the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides with more than 30 expeditions including Everest and Aconcagua (the highest mountain in the western hemisphere).

I choose Laurie Skreslet as my hero because he is from Calgary and has climbed a lot of the Rocky Mountains as well as the highest peaks in the world. He has inspired me to enjoy the outdoors and appreciate that I live so close to the mountains. His life has taught me that I can make my dreams come true if I am willing to work and focus on my goals.
