This bronze is the first sculpture to honor an African American woman in the United States Capitol, gracing Emancipation Hall at the Capital Visitor Center.
Born into Slavery in 1797, Truth escaped to freedom in 1827 with her baby daughter. Though undeducated, Truth became a renowned orator espousing equal rights for African Americans and women.
