Terry Fox

by Keegan from Barrie

"If I die right now, I will die happy." "To reach your dreams people have to try ."

Terry is one extremely awesome man. If I were you I would read on for sure. I chose Terry Fox because he did a run for cancer research and thanks to him if someone in my family gets cancer they might live. I also chose Terry Fox because he had more courage than anyone I ever knew, know or anyone I ever heard of.

Terry was born on July 28th 1958 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He was educated at J.R. Secondary School and the Simon Fraser University but unfortunately he didn’t graduate university. Terry’s mom’s name is Betty Fox, Terry’s dad’s name is Rolly Fox, his older brother’s name is Fred Fox, his younger brother’s name is Darrell Fox, his younger sister’s name is Judith Fox, his uncle’s name is Fred Fox, and his aunt’s name is Norma Fox. An interesting fact from Terry’s youth is that for fun, he would stack blocks to make a tower and if they fell he would stack the blocks up again.

The people that influenced Terry were the children in the hospital who were talking about what they wanted to be when they grow up and most of them would not live to be what they wanted to be because they had cancer. The other person who influenced Terry is Dick Traum, a one-legged runner who ran in the New York City Marathon and Terry thought if Dick could run a marathon he could.

Terry had two big obstacles. First he had cancer, and then he had his leg amputated at the age of 18 in the year 1976. The thing that Terry did to try and overcome these obstacles is that he ran ½ of the way across Canada to raise money for cancer research. An example of Terry’s actions is that he ran across Canada to raise money for cancer research no matter how he was feeling. Another example of Terry’s actions is that he talked to kids at schools and he raised over 1 million dollars for cancer research. The achievements that Terry accomplished are that he ran over ½ across Canada across almost 6 whole provinces and he raised over 1 million dollars, he raised over 24 million dollars. The thing that Terry did to make me consider him a hero is that he ran halfway across Canada in all weather; rain, snow, etc, to raise money for cancer research.

The character traits that Terry displayed are courage and respect. Terry had courage because he ran across Canada on one good leg, in any weather and no matter how he was feeling and he fought cancer when no one else would fight cancer. He had respect because he was running across Canada not to be famous, but to help find a cure for cancer. Terry Fox influenced me to raise money for cancer research, and to run hard on the Terry Fox Run day.
