by Larisa from Suwanee

Teddy bears are named after Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt because once he saved a cub on a hunting trip. He was our vice president in 1901 and became president shortly after McKinley's assassination. Roosevelt is a hero because he protected more than 230 million acres of American Wilderness, led and won with the Rough Riders, and cared for the equality of all classes.

As a child he was homeschooled and didn't have many friends. Therefore he developed a love for nurturing animals. Even as an adult many of the things he did during his presidency were based around protecting all animals.

Theodore Roosevelt is a hero to many because in his lifetime he showed compassion and selflessness. He was an environmentalist who fought for animal rights and for America's citizens in the late 1800's and early 1900's. On Biography.com, it said that Roosevelt was the first president environmentalist and he signed the National Monuments Act. The National Monuments Act protects numerous forest and wildlife sanctuaries along with sites like the Grand Canyon. This shows that Roosevelt was compassionate towards wildlife and wanted to protect it. Roosevelt also showed Selflessness in battle. Biography.com stated that Theodore Roosevelt organized a volunteer group called the Rough Riders that he led and won with, in the battle of San Juan Hill in 1898. Selflessness is shown because he cared for his country's safety and would've fought in a battle than to stand alongside it. Therefore, Theodore Roosevelt improved the safety and protection of animals and cared for the lives of all Americans more than his own.

To many Americans, he is known for the "Square Deal". The "Square Deal" made monopolies illegal and gave each (white) man more equality. No (white) man would get less money just because he was in the lower class and no (white)  man would get more money  just because he is in a higher class. His presidency became more known after the Square Deal.

Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt is a hero to many because of his bravery in battle, and for his care towards animals and the equality of different American classes. Roosevelt protected wildlife and got economic fairness for all classes. Without him, many of our natural sites could be gone and many species could be extinct.
