April is Autism Awareness Month
Understanding Autism
World Autism Awareness Day is celebrated annually on April 2nd to increase acceptance, support, and understanding of people on the autism spectrum. Sanctioned by the UN, the day kicks off Autism Awareness Month, often marked by wearing blue, lighting up landmarks, and hosting educational events to foster inclusion and celebrate neurodiversity.

Autism (Autism Spectrum Disorder, ASD) is a lifelong developmental condition affecting how individuals interact with the world, process sensory information, and communicate. As a spectrum, it varies widely, encompassing challenges in social interaction, communication, repetitive behaviors, and intense focus on specific interests. Diagnosis often occurs in early childhood via specialized assessment, though many are diagnosed later, with a global prevalence roughly estimated at 1 in 127.
Different Types of Autism (The Spectrum)
While historically categorized into types (e.g., Asperger’s, PDD-NOS), autism is now recognized by medical professionals, such as in the DSM-5, as a single "spectrum" condition. This emphasizes that individuals have vastly different strengths and support needs, rather than distinct type. See more HERE.
